Quiet Time and Russell Brand
I'm getting back into the swing of things in London (temperature around 3 degrees) after having been in Asia for a little while (temperature around 33 degrees). Even so.. it's good to be back.
So you're thinking, random blog title, right? Okay, bear with me and trust me on this one. Last week I talked Sleep Theory. We looked at a valuable Boston Globe article on the importance of sleep, and also featured my thoughts on the honey-heavy dew of slumber. Put simply, sleep and high performance go hand in hand together. If you are interested in being a high performer, you should be getting enough sleep. If you don't, how do you find enough zzzzing to perform at your best? (I don't have an exact definition for zzzzing, but you know what I mean?)
But what if you don't have the time to squeeze more sleep into your night? Perhaps you have children, or a hectic schedule, or a demanding cat that wakes you up at exactly 6:04am every morning, or it's just hard to know how to find the time to sleep more. Or - and I am well guilty of this - you get into bed and just kinda delay switching the light out. You read, tap away on the iPhone, or just enjoy one of the only times of the day when you get some quiet and stillness, so you go to sleep later than you should. If any of this sounds like you, then read on.
An incredible experiment has been taking place in California in some of the state's most unruly schools. Twice a day a gong sounds in the classrooms and the students stop for what is called 'Quiet Time'. With stunning results. Quiet Time has been described as 'meditation rebranded'.
It works so well that a number of luminaries recently visited one particular school to join in - including David Lynch and Russell Brand. (Ahhh, so that's what the title was all about then.)
See what happened, and hear all about this fascinating experiment here. (Photo above also from excellent SFGate article)
Don't keep this one on the QT - spread the word and forward this blog on now. I've got a feeling other people you know might like this too and find some extra zzzzing. Enjoy your week.
