Get some Olympic spirit
[1 minute self development]
Six top-of-the-range tickets for Synchronised Swimming? A day out at the Handball? Greco-Roman wrestling anyone?
Yep, the Olympic organisers have done a terrific job in getting us Brits to part with our cash for events that we didn't care much about, or even know existed. Mind you, from the image above, Greco-Roman Wrestling certainly does look like an unusual experience for competitors and spectators alike.
I've just finished writing my book Persuade in a minute (published September 1st, Virgin Books), and have admired the way organisers have used some of the best techniques in the book to get us to part with our cash.
Next time you want to persuade anyone of anything, you too can partake in some Olympic persuasive spirit. Here's a little snippet from the book to show you how - I call this 'putting the clock on it'.
Make them realise that the deal is not going to be there forever. They’d better act fast, otherwise it’ll be gone.
- Make an offer for a limited time.
- Make your availability limited (or your product, or whatever).
- Set a deadline.
- Limit the quantity of what you’re offering.
You'll notice that the Olympic organisers have cunningly done all of the above to brilliant effect. Which is why you may well be traipsing off to an aggressive version of Twister Greco-Roman wrestling in 13 months time.
